Abadía Retuerta Wines
Abadía Retuerta is a unique winery located in Sardón de Duero, in the heart of Castilla y León, with roots stretching back to the 12th century when Premonstratensian monks founded the abbey that today gives the project its name. The modern winery, however, was born in 1996 when Swiss pharmaceutical group Novartis undertook the ambitious restoration of this historic estate, transforming it into one of the most prestigious wine projects in Spain. The estate encompasses over 200 hectares of vineyards on the right bank of the Duero River, in a zone that falls outside the Ribera del Duero denomination of origin. Rather than limiting the project, this independence has allowed Abadía Retuerta to work with complete freedom in varietal selection and winemaking, ultimately positioning itself as one of the most celebrated wine estates in the country. From the outset, the winery benefited from the technical direction of Pascal Delbeck, former winemaker at Château Ausone in Saint-Émilion, which instilled a Bordeaux-inspired philosophy of terroir respect and plot-by-plot vinification. Today, the winemaking team continues this approach, crafting wines from individual named plots such as Pago Negralada, Pago Valdebellón, and Pago La Garnacha. The winery's most iconic wine is the Selección Especial, a structured red based primarily on Tempranillo, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The crown jewel of the range is Le Domaine, the estate's grand vin, which offers the greatest depth and complexity the property can achieve. Abadía Retuerta also houses the five-star hotel LeDomaine, integrated within the beautifully restored abbey building, making it one of Europe's most remarkable wine tourism destinations. It is a rare combination of medieval heritage, winemaking excellence, and world-class hospitality.
