La Poda Tinta de Toro is a full-bodied red wine from Spain's DO Toro, crafted entirely from the native Tinta de Toro grape — a thick-skinned, intensely concentrated cousin of Tempranillo found nowhere else in the world. The wine is produced under the Colección La Poda label, a project overseen by Almudena Alberca MW, the first Spanish woman to earn the Master of Wine title, and one of the most respected figures in contemporary Spanish winemaking.

The vineyards sit at elevations between 600 and 800 metres on the windswept Castilian plateau of Zamora. The extreme continental climate, with scorching summers and bitterly cold winters, forces the vines to dig deep and yield small, flavour-packed clusters. After harvest, the wine sees between four and six months of oak ageing — long enough to add structure and aromatic complexity, yet restrained enough to keep the vibrant fruit of the Tinta de Toro variety firmly at centre stage. If you're looking to buy Tinta de Toro red wine online, this is a benchmark example of the denomination's character.

On the nose, the bouquet is generous and immediately seductive: ripe blackberry, damson and blueberry are laced with warming notes of black pepper, clove, dark chocolate and a whisper of tobacco. A balsamic undertone adds freshness and lift. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet polished — grippy, ripe tannins give way to a silky, full-bodied mouthfeel with impressive concentration of dark fruit and spice through the mid-palate. The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of dried herbs and toasted oak.

At 15% vol, this is a wine that rewards patience: decanting for 30 to 60 minutes opens up the fruit and softens the tannins beautifully. It pairs with confidence alongside grilled red meats, slow-roasted lamb, game dishes, aged sheep's cheese and bold charcuterie. A terroir-driven, age-worthy red that captures the raw, authentic soul of Toro — available now with European delivery from Mercado 46.

The Winery

Founded in 2018

Colección La Poda is an avant-garde wine collection presented by Grupo Bodegas Palacio 1894, one of the top twenty wine groups in Spain with over 125 years of experience in the ageing and production of high-quality wines. The collection was officially launched in Madrid on 19 February 2018 and originates within Bodegas y Viñedos Anzil, located in the Denominación de Origen Toro, one of the four wineries that make up Grupo Bodegas Palacio 1894. Behind La Poda stands Almudena Alberca, technical director of Bodegas Viña Mayor and the first Spanish woman to obtain the prestigious Master of Wine title — a guarantee of rigour and excellence that permeates every reference in the collection. The philosophy of Colección La Poda pays tribute to the art of viticulture. The name itself evokes that fundamental vineyard task: rigorous pruning and careful selection in the field are the tools used to obtain exceptional quality clusters for crafting honest, expressive wines. The grapes come from selected vineyards where a continental climate and stony soils contribute to the concentration and typicity of each variety. The collection spans four distinct denominations of origin — Rías Baixas, Rueda, Ribera del Duero and Toro — and comprises four monovarietal references: La Poda Albariño, La Poda Sauvignon Blanc, La Poda Tempranillo and La Poda Tinta de Toro. The latter, crafted from Tinta de Toro sourced from estate vineyards over 40 years old, faithfully expresses the typicity of the variety and the strong, characterful territory of Toro. Aged for between 4 and 6 months in barrel, it achieves a fine balance between elegance, fruit and varietal expression, resulting in a rich, spiced and vibrant red wine. Grupo Bodegas Palacio 1894 manages over 930 hectares of vineyards and produces 15 million bottles annually, of which 40% is exported to international markets, earning widespread recognition from national and international critics alike.
