Understanding AOC Côtes de Provence

Established as an AOC in 1977, Côtes de Provence is one of the largest appellations in the south of France, encompassing over 20,000 hectares across the Var department and the western edges of Bouches-du-Rhône. The landscape is dramatic and varied: rolling garrigue-covered hills, ancient granite and schist outcroppings, and coastal plains where sea breezes moderate the intense summer heat. This complexity of soils and mesoclimates gives the wines of Côtes de Provence a remarkable range of expression — far broader than many wine drinkers expect.

Beyond the Rosé: A Region of Real Depth

Yes, Côtes de Provence is the spiritual home of the pale, elegant Provençal rosé — wines celebrated for their delicate salmon hue, lifted aromatics of white peach, rose petal and citrus zest, and that effortlessly refreshing mouthfeel. But the appellation also produces whites of genuine character, built on Rolle (Vermentino), Clairette and Ugni Blanc, with a distinctive floral quality and creamy texture. Reds, though less prominent, offer grippy tannins and warm spice when crafted with care from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre blends.
