Sierra Cantabria Blanco 2024 is a compelling argument for white wine lovers to look beyond Rioja's celebrated reds. Crafted by one of the denomination's most storied estates — five generations rooted in San Vicente de la Sonsierra since 1870 — this white represents a bold and refined take on blending indigenous and international varieties.

The 2024 blend is a thoughtfully composed assemblage: 35% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Viura, 20% Tempranillo Blanco, 10% Malvasía, and 5% Maturana. Winemaker Marcos Eguren — named Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin in his 2023 Rioja Special Report — employs a dual vinification approach: the Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in a mix of first- and second-use French oak barrels from the Vosges, with a medium-long Burgundy-style toast, spending two months on the wood, while the remaining varieties are vinified in stainless steel to retain freshness and aromatic precision. The result is a wine of real sophistication, earning 90 points from the prestigious Guía Peñín.

On the nose, the bouquet is inviting and layered — white peach, ripe pear, and delicate blossom notes intertwined with a subtle toasty nuance from the partial oak aging. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a silky mouthfeel, fruit-forward yet structured, with well-integrated acidity that provides lift and definition. The finish is notably long and elegant, with lingering fruit and a quiet mineral thread that adds complexity and length.

At 13.5% ABV and best served between 8–10°C without decanting, this is a terroir-driven white wine from Rioja that stands proudly alongside the finest white wine expressions from Spain. A natural match for fresh shellfish, grilled sea bass, risotto, or young soft cheeses.
