Viyuela Gran Reserva 2017 stands as the crowning achievement of Bodegas Viyuela, a family-owned winery rooted in Boada de Roa, at the heart of Ribera del Duero. Founded in 2003 by José Ángel González Viyuela with a clear commitment to quality over volume, the estate has steadily earned recognition from international critics including Decanter and James Suckling — and this Gran Reserva is the fullest expression of that vision.

Crafted entirely from Tempranillo, the noble variety that defines Ribera del Duero, the 2017 vintage was harvested by hand with meticulous bunch selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table. The wine then underwent extended ageing in French oak barrels — consistent with Viyuela's tradition of prolonged wood maturation — before further refinement in bottle, meeting the demanding requirements of Gran Reserva status.

The nose is rich and layered, offering dark plum, blackberry and dried fig alongside balsamic lift, sweet spice and gentle smokiness drawn from fine-grained French oak. On the palate, the mouthfeel is structured yet polished: grippy yet silky tannins speak to a wine that has earned its complexity through time, while a crisp, vibrant acidity typical of Ribera del Duero's high-altitude vineyards keeps everything taut and focused. Dark cherry, leather, liquorice and warm baking spices build through the mid-palate into a long, lingering finish with resonant toasty notes and forest-floor depth.

This is an age-worthy Spanish red wine that rewards patience as much as it rewards opening tonight alongside the right dish. Pair it with slow-roasted lamb, prime-cut red meats, game, or a bold aged sheep's cheese. For those looking to buy Viyuela Gran Reserva 2017 online, it's a wine that consistently punches at the top of its appellation.

The Winery

Founded in 2003

Bodegas Viyuela is a family winery located in Boada de Roa, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen. Although the family has been cultivating vineyards since the early 19th century, it was in 2003 that José Ángel González Viyuela took the decisive step of building a modern winery to fully express the potential of his terroir and viticultural heritage. Today, the general management is led by his daughter, Laura González Sainz, reinforcing the family and generational character of the project. The winery works exclusively with the Tempranillo variety, grown across 23 hectares of estate vineyards and an additional 10 hectares under controlled management. All harvesting is done by hand, with rigorous grape selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar, ensuring the highest quality raw material. The winemaking approach is guided by vine age: the oldest parcels yield wines destined for longer ageing and greater complexity, while younger vines produce fresher, more approachable expressions. All wines spend time in Bordeaux-style oak barrels for varying periods, adding structure and elegance. Annual production stands at around 150,000 bottles, divided into two clearly defined ranges: the Classic line — comprising Viyuela Barrica, Viyuela Crianza and Viyuela Reserva — and the Signature line, with more prestigious references such as Viyuela 3+3, Viyuela 10 and Viyuela Xº Aniversario. International recognition has consistently validated the winery's trajectory: outstanding scores from critics including James Suckling, Tim Atkin and Decanter, and in 2019 Mundus Vini named it the best winery in Ribera del Duero. The Gran Reserva 2016 earned a Grand Gold at that same competition, alongside the Best of Show award in the Gran Reserva category for the appellation.
